Mueang means town/city and Ligor refers to the classical dance drama that was developed in this region. It's also famous for creating 'nang talung' or 'Shadow play' puppetry. This is an art form where puppets in various forms, from people, to animals, to objects and even mythological creatures are intricately carved from buffalo-hide. Light is then used against the puppets to create silhouettes while the puppet master tells a story using voice and song. The most famous puppet master is Suchart Sapsin and he has won many awards for both his manufacture and performance skills and has even performed for the King of Thailand. One day i went to his home which is open to the public. He has 3 grand-children who, despite their age, speak excellent english. They showed me around the work shop and studio, explaining and demonstrating the process of how the puppets are made. The buffalo-hide is beaten until almost clear, then a sketch is made where details are chiseled and grooved out before the outline is carefully carved out. I even had a go at doing this myself. Afterwards, you get the chance to buy some Shadow puppets. These range from small ones that fit in the palm of your hand ...
