Ancient Siam - A Thai History Disneyland" Bahtman's travel blog entry: "This morning over coffee and some strange deep-fried x-shaped pastries of wonderfully-subtle flavor, Tida told me we're off to see more ancient ruins - more ancient than Ayutthaya, she says. As usual I have no idea what to expect, but of course I'm game. Off we drove into, then through, the heart of Bangkok via the downtown freeways, then through the industrial southeast sector of Bangkok, eventually turning onto Thanon Sukhumwit, the road I'd heard so much about in my Pimsleur language course conversation drills. "Thanon Sukhumwit yuu tee nee klahp? Mai yuu tee nee - yuu tee nohn klahp." ("Is Sukhumwit Road here? No, it's not here - it's over there." etc.) Almost immediately we noticed a humongous three-headed elephant towering over the surrounding landscape - the Erawan Museum, built by Thai businessman Lek Viriyahbhun as an adjunct to the place we were going to visit, the Ancient City (aka Ancient Siam.) As Murph would have it, time constraints would prevent us from seeing it from anything but a distance, so it'll have to wait for a future trip. In addition to the museum housed in the pedestal of the statue, you can apparently take an elevator through one of the elephant's legs up to an elaborate two-level shrine built within the elephant's body itself.
