We found an organisation on the internet, the Elephant Valley Project run by Globalteer (a charity registered in the UK) and booked ourselves in for one week. We had arranged to meet the manager of the project, Jack, at the airport in the capital, Phnom Penh. Jack was English, 26 years old and resembled an Eminem fan dressed in baggy jeans (hanging on to an almost non-existent bottom for dear life), baseball cap and skate shoes. After dropping us off at a rather ropey guesthouse in the city, he proceeded to tell us that he had a date that evening and that he would probably be out drinking for most of the night. Now, we weren't expecting David Bellamy, but this guy was not exactly what we had envisaged. At 7am the following morning, a rather bleary-eyed Jack collected us for the journey by taxi to the jungles of Mondulkiri Province, approximately seven hours away in the east of Cambodia. The cab itself was a 1987 Toyota Camry, which appears to be the weapon of choice for any self respecting suicidal taxi driver in Cambodia.
