Trieste Hotels and Things to Do

Trieste is one of the least Italian places in Italy. Geographically, it's practically on the Slovenian border. But the city was part of the Hapsburg Empire for much of its history, and as a result, Trieste is very Austrian in feel. Don't be surprised to find schnitzel on the menu here.

The location made Trieste an important port and a rival of Venice since ancient times. There are still some Roman ruins, and there's plenty of medieval architecture, as well as buildings from the late 18th century, when the Hapsburg used Trieste as one of their main ports.

Intellectuals like Sigmund Freud, Rainer Maria Rilke, and James Joyce have called Trieste home. In fact, Joyce wrote much of his work during his time in Trieste.

Things to do in Trieste.

One of the most pleasant things to do here is to find a sidewalk table at one of the cafes along the Gulf of Trieste. There are plenty of restaurants and atmospheric coffee houses to choose from.

North of town, Castello di Miramare was built in the 1850s for Archduke Maximilian. The interior is very ornate, but the gardens and ocean-front location are beautiful. It's a great spot for a stroll or a jog. In the summer, there are sound-and-light shows at night.

Trieste's other castle, San Giusto, has great views of the Adriatic from its walls. Begun in 1470, it took nearly 150 years to finish. If you're interested in old arms and period decor, you can check out the museum inside.

Not far from the castle on the Capitoline Hill, the Cattedrale di San Giusto has a campanile that dates from the 14th century. The church was built on the remains of an ancient Roman temple and there are several other ruins in the park. Look for the 13th-century mosaics in the church.

Hotels in Trieste.

Right on the water, Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia is the heart of Trieste. If you can afford it, stay on or near the square. The four-star Grand Hotel Duchi d'Aosta puts you right in the the action. Even if you don't stay here, consider coming to Harry's Grill for a meal or a Duchi cocktail. It's one of the best restaurants on the piazza. The hotel, which is an old building in the neoclassical style, combines old-world elegance with modern luxuries like an indoor pool, a good spa, WiFi access, and LCD TVs.

The other grand hotel in Trieste is the Savoia Excelsior Palace. Since being renovated, the rooms are beautifully outfitted and decorated. And many have ocean-view balconies. The Savoia is a short stroll from Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia and it's convenient for shopping and dining.

There's a popular national park outside town, near Castello di Miramare, and there are two hotels in that neighborhood. If you want to enjoy the beach, choose one of them. Riviera & Maximilian's has been open since 1910. It has two outdoor pools, and a private beach with water sports equipment rentals. You can have a buffet lunch at the beach or dine on the pretty terrace overlooking the sea. Rooms in the newer wing have balconies or terraces.

Hotel Miramare also offers good access to the national park and the beach. With just 32-rooms, it's a small, contemporary property with a good restaurant and less-formal cafe with views that seem to go on forever.
